Obituary

Athel Anderson Scott passed from this life on July 11, 2008, at Cheyenne Lodge, Jamestown , KS , at age 100 years, 10 Months, 17 Days.

Athel was born on the family homestead west of Norway , Kansas , on August 24, 1907 to Alexander and Estella (Hay) Scott. He attended Norway Schools and enjoyed life by farming and raising livestock. He traded mules and farmed the homestead with horses until after 'normal' retirement age. Many people would stop on hi-way 148 to take pictures of him with his teams as he was planting corn or other crops. During the depression he worked the Republic County roads with team and road grader at $2.00 a day. He was paid an extra dollar for furnishing his own team of horses.

Athel was a great friend to the community. He would be quick to help do the chores of someone ill or injured. He always had time to visit with people. He was a great resource of the history of the community, who farmed where, who married whom, and shared stories of the life around Republic County . He shared his humor and enjoyed a great laugh. He also loved to dance and was the caller for many square dances in the Norway town hall. He was a 64 year member of Lebanon Lodge #221 AF & AM of Scandia . A 58 year member or Eastern Star Ophelia Chapter, Belleville ; An 82 year member of the Woodmen association. He had been active in his youth with the IOOF in Norway , and a member of the Anti-Horse thief association. He played town team basketball as a young man, and helped win many tournaments - even playing in two different towns on the same night. Most people playing against him did not realize he only had the sight in his right eye. His blind left eye prevented him from serving in the Army as World War II called many from the community to duty.

He was proud to be the friend to many generations and ages - and loved to "ride along" to a horse sale or rodeo. He enjoyed playing cards and enjoyed helping kids learn Pitch or Canasta. "No Trump" was his bridge bid. He would talk "politics" with you, especially if it was Republican.

He married Marjorie Adams in 1948 and celebrated 40 years of marriage before her death in 1988. He was preceded in death by his Parents, a Sister, Helen, and brother-in- law Loren Howe, a sister, Alice and brother-in-law Lester Thompson, brother, Warren Scott, and a sister-in law, Francis, and Sister in Law, Carol Scott. He is survived by a son, Carl 'Andy' Scott of Lenexa, Kansas; Daughter in Law, Jean Michael of Salem Oregon, and granddaughter Shannon Michael of Montana; a brother, Alex Scott Jr., of Junction City, Kansas; and by many Nieces, Nephews, and a multitude of friends. He enjoyed being "Grandpa" to DA and Betty Hansen, their children and grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia with Rev. Dean R. Frazier officiating. Visitation will be held from 9 AM to 9 PM Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Norway, KS with Masonic graveside services conducted by Belleville Lodge #129 AF & AM.
