Charles E.
Herink
July 15, 1915 – January 13, 2009
Charles E. Herink, son of Charles and Anna (Kopsa) Herink was born on a farm north of Cuba, KS on July 15, 1915. He passed from this life on Tues., Jan. 13, 2009 at Park Villa Nursing Home, Clyde at the age of 93. He started school at Tabor country school. He and his parents later moved to Cuba where they had a dairy. Every morning and evening he would deliver milk to their customers. Sometimes, he would be late for school, but being a good student, he was excused. In high school, he played the trumpet in the band and was a member of the boys glee club and played on the basketball team. After graduating high school, he moved to Crete, NE to work at a brewery. He later returned to Cuba and married his high school sweetheart, Tyra Lahodny in 1934 at Beloit, KS. They moved to Concordia where Charles was employed by the State Highway Dept. and later took a job with List and Clark Construction. In 1939, Charles, Tyra and small son, Jim moved to Clyde where he began farming. He was one of the first farmers in the area to have a mounted corn picker and plant soybeans. Besides his own work, Charles did a lot of custom work. In the winter he would haul hay with Bernard Chavey and helped his good friend Arvid Detrixhe working on vacuvators and making deliveries. When he retired from farming, Charles worked for Joe Detrixhe until his health began to fail. He liked to hunt, fish, play pool, attend auto races and work in the garden in his spare time. He is survived by his wife, Tyra Herink, Clyde, KS; a son, Jim Herink & wife Jan, Manhattan, KS; a daughter, Diedra Blackwell, Hays, KS; grandchildren, Cheryl Williamsen & husband Paul, Rossmoor, CA, Sheila Wildeman & husband Terry, Lawrence, KS, Heather Blackwell, San Diego, CA & Scott Herink & wife Chris, Topeka, KS; great grandchildren, Michael Williamsen, Rossmoor, CA, Maryan, Ashley & Garrett Wildeman, Lawrence, KS & Katherina & Anna Marie Herink, Topeka, KS. He preceded in death by his parents & an infant brother. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM, Fri., Jan. 16, 2009 at the Clyde United Methodist Church with Rev. Anita Strommen officiating. Visitation will be held from 12-8 PM, Thurs., Jan. 15, 2009 at Chaput Mortuary, Clyde. Burial will follow the services at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Clyde. The family suggests memorials to the Clyde Ambulance Fund.
