Obituary

Chester W. (Chet) Johnson

Chet was born on September 10, 1917 in Kackley , Kansas to Charlie and Agnes Johnson. He passed from this life on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 in Bakersfield, CA at the age of 90. Chet proudly served in the 3rd Marine Division, 1st Battalion, B Company, 21st Marines, from 1943 to 1946, fighting on Guam and Iwo Jima .

He was a member of Calvary Bible Church and loved the Lord, his family and his country. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Lewis, Glenn and Maurice. He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Norma Lee; daughter, Karen Houle and husband Bob; son Warren Johnson and wife Charlotte; daughter Jody Meadors and husband Mike. He was "Bompy" to grandchildren Jordan Houle, Eric Johnson, Chad Johnson, Courtney Meadors, Nick Meadors, and Jason Meadors and wife Jenny, and their sons Jackson and Grant Meadors; sisters, Elsa LeSage, Mildred Stanford, Jean Marshall and brother, Jarl Johnson, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Chet and family moved to Bakersfield from Concordia , Kansas in 1959, and shortly thereafter met longtime friends Helen and Harley Stennes and daughters, Pam, Barbara and Lori.

Chet repaired computer printers at Computer Reliance and then at Advanced Laser Source, where he "retired" due to declining health in March 2008. He enjoyed bowling on the Senior Bowling League on Monday afternoons for many years at Westchester Bowl, where he had numerous friends.

Chet was hard-working, a man of integrity, a faithful and devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. His passing has left a huge void in the lives of those who knew and loved him, but we rest in the assurance that we will be together again.

We would like to thank the nurses and staff at CBCC, Dr. Alan Cartmell for his friendship, kindness and care, and to Hoffman Hospice for their support in the days prior to Chet's death.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel at Calvary Bible Church , 48 Manor Drive , Bakersfield , CA .

Chet will be buried at Pleasant Hills Cemetery in Concordia , Kansas on Friday, May 23, 2008 at 10:00 AM.
