D.L. "Heavy" Layton was born on July 26, 1913 in Rural Jamestown, KS to Fred and Winnifred Carpenter Layton. He passed from this life on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2008 at Mt. Joseph Senior Community, Concordia, KS at the age of 95. ?He graduated from Concordia High School. He graduated from Kansas Wesleyan, where he played football. He married Rita M. Bombardier on June 3, 1940 in California. She preceded him death on May 7, 2007. He served as a Navy pilot in the U.S. Navy. He was the City Clerk for the City of Concordia for 15 years. He served on the local Hospital Board, as Mayor of Concordia and the Concordia City Commission. He served the City of Concordia in several capacities throughout his life. He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. He is survived by his son: Robert Layton & wife Janet, Salina, KS; a daughter: Marie E. Higgins & husband Larry, Salina, KS; 8 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife-Rita; his parents; 2 Sisters & 1 Brother. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM on Friday, Oct. 17, 2008 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Concordia with Rev. Barry Brinkman officiating. Visitation will be held from 9 AM to 9 PM, Thurs., Oct. 16, 2008 at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home. Burial will follow the services at St. Concordia Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church or Mt. Joseph Senior Community.
