Obituary

This obituary is published as a courtesy to the Doris Chaput Family.

Doris Mae Chaput, 84, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and devoted service to her family and community. She was born on July 2, 1941, in Concordia, Kansas, to Charles Arthur Emery and Wanda Ellen (Woolard) Emery Weishapl. On July 15, 1958, she was united in marriage with Terrill James Chaput. Doris dedicated much of her life to caring for others. She worked as an operating room nurse at the hospital in Concordia and later brought creativity to her cake decorating business while living in Parsons and Independence, Kansas. Over the years, she also served in the tag office at the courthouse, worked at Potts Funeral Home in Independence, and, after moving to Abilene, was secretary at Frontier Estates and St. Andrews Church. She also generously volunteered at the hospital gift shop. Doris was a member of the Daughters of Isabella. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Wanda; her brother, Gene Emery; her son, Timothy Chaput; her grandson, Logan Chaput; and her son-in-law, Phillip Gale. She is survived by her husband, Terry Chaput; her children, Debra and JR Reynolds of Neodesha, Kansas, Terry Gale of Coffeyville, Kansas, Cathy Evans of Hutchinson, Kansas, Cynthia and Jay Smith of Abilene, Kansas, James Chaput of Omega, Oklahoma, Michael and Helen Chaput of Abilene, Kansas, and Jeff and Crystal Chaput of Abilene, Kansas; her siblings, Larry Emery and Rhonda Sieck; 29 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 A.M., Friday, May 22, 2026 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Abilene. Burial will follow at Mt. St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Abilene. Rosary will be 5:00 P.M., Thursday evening at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home with visitation to follow. The family suggests memorials be given to the St. Andrew’s Catholic School. Memorials may be dropped off or mailed to Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 NW Third St., Abilene, Kansas 67410. Online condolences can be sent to www.martinbeckercarlson.com
