Dorothy Ilene Morgan - wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother – went home to be with Jesus on Sunday, May 3, 2026 in Concordia. She was 93 years old.
Born on June 21, 1932, Dorothy was a life-long resident of Cloud County, attending the Lowland schoolhouse as a child before graduating from Concordia High School. She went on to attend York College in Nebraska, earning a teaching certificate before serving as a 1-4 grade teacher at the Hollis schoolhouse. Dorothy would not teach for long, however, as writing letters to a young military man who she had known since childhood led to her marrying Mark C. Morgan on December 20, 1953, at Huscher.
Dorothy wore many hats throughout her life, serving as a farmer’s wife for many years, a realtor for Double M Realty alongside her husband, a Sunday School teacher at Trinity United Methodist Church, a member of the local P.E.O. chapter AV for 46 years, which included serving as president for several years, as well as many other acts of service to the community. She dedicated herself to helping each of her four daughters excel in 4-H, as each of them were ten-year members. Furthermore, she was known for sewing countless flannel baby blankets for her grandchildren and great grandchildren in addition to other projects. Dorothy’s cooking was also exceptional, with her apple butter, chocolate cake, strawberries, “Happy Day” cake, and peaches being just a few of her specialties. The peaches especially were one of her trademark recipes, earning her the title “Grandma Peaches” by some of her great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Walter E. and Lula (Koester) Johnson, granddaughter Heather Lauer, and grandson Jared Hughes.
She is survived by Mark, her husband and the love of her life for seventy-two years; brother Norman (Sherry) Johnson; daughters Deb (Matt) Lauer of Concordia; Patti (Dave) Hughes of Lampe, Missouri; Tami (Terry) Landis of El Dorado Springs, Missouri; and Susie (Ric) Ratzlaff of Buhler, Kansas; grandchildren Jennie Allen, Mark Lauer, Kim Lauer, David (Brandi) Hughes, Christi (Eric) Olliverson, Shane (Kendra) Hughes, Trevor Landis, Tanner Landis, Megan Ratzlaff, and Ryan Ratzlaff, in addition to 15 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, May 7th, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Hollis Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6th, 2026 with the family receiving visitors from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the P.E.O. Chapter AV for Cottey College scholarships or Sunset Home and can be sent in care of Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, P.O. Box 606, Concordia, KS 66901.
