George A. Fredrickson, Jr., age 93, died Thurs., Oct. 29, 2015 at Sunset Nursing Home, Concordia. He was born on Sept. 17, 1922 in Concordia, KS to George (Sr.) & Dorothy (Sjolander) Fredrickson.
He attended Dist. 8 grade school and graduated from Concordia High School in 1940. He attended Kansas State University until he was accepted into the Army Air Force Cadet program. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant and trained as a bombardier. He served during WWII in the Eighth Air Force and flew 35 bombing missions over Germany, with his final mission on Christmas Eve 1943. He returned to the states and trained Chinese cadets to bomb until the war was over. Upon returning to Concordia, he began to farm east of Concordia. He married Arlene Nelson in May 1947. She preceded him in death on Aug. 18, 1971. Their years together were filled with farm work, church activities at The Baptist Church, 4-H, Sunday family gatherings and fishing trips to Minnesota. George later married Betty Gibson, who preceded him on Aug. 15, 1979. On Aug. 2, 1980, George married Wanda Carlgren in Grand Island, NE and they made their home on the farm until moving into town in 2003. George was a member of The Baptist Church, American Legion Post #76 & VFW Post #588. George participated in the first NCK Honor Flight to Washington, DC in May 2011.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda, Concordia; sons, Steven (Linda), Topeka & Ric (Lynette), Concordia; daughter, Debra Pishny (Roger), Waterville; step-daughter, Brita Smith (Thomas), Petaluma, CA & step-son, Greg Carlgren (Maggie), Concordia; sister, Phyllis Carlgren, San Antonio, TX; 6 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren & 2 step great grandchildren;
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Arlene; second wife, Betty; sister, Dell Christine Warner Powell; daughter in law, Eileen Fredrickson & step-son, Randy Carlgren.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM, Tues., Nov. 3, 2015 at The Baptist Church, Concordia with Rev. David Fabarez officiating. Burial with Military honors by Ft. Riley, American Legion Post #76 & VFW Post #588 will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia. Visitation will be from 10 am to 9 pm with the family greeting friends from 6-8 pm, Mon, Nov. 2, 2015 at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home.
