Obituary

Gladys M. Travis went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 14, 2011 at Mt. Joseph Senior Village in Concordia , KS at the age of 100.

She was born on May 31, 1910 on a farm near Hoxie , KS . In two months she would have been 101 years old. She was the oldest of four children born to "Jottie" and Emma Quakenbush. When Gladys was a young woman, she moved to Concordia where she enrolled in the business college. It was there that she met and subsequently married her loving husband, Wallace Travis, on May 31, 1928. He preceded her in death on April 2, 1986.

Gladys was an outstanding knitter, and she put her knitting talents to good use, teaching knitting and finally opening The Knit Shop in downtown Concordia. Even after she closed her shop, she continued her passion for knitting by taking on special projects for many people. Her knitted afghans were things of beauty. She loved and was very active in the Concordia Wesleyan Church . Gladys also served for several years at Cloud County Health Center . Before she became ill, she enjoyed attending AARP meetings. About 3 years ago, her advanced age prompted her move from her home at 1309 Cedar to assisted living at Marquis Place before poor health caused her to move to Mt. Joseph Senior Village .

Gladys is survived by her son, Kenneth Travis and wife Theresa of Midland, TX; sister, Evelyn McWain and husband Fred of Quincy, WA; grandchildren, Debi Musick & husband Casey of Humble, TX, Gary Travis & wife Bryanette of Corpus Christi, TX, Jim Travis & wife Mary Jo of Maple Valley, WA & Kristi Sbrena and husband Sal of Tomball, TX; 7 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
