Obituary

H. Margaret (Larson) Coulter was born at less than 3 lbs. in Fergus Falls , Minnesota , December 2, 1917 to Emil G. and Hilma Olson Larson. She passed from this life on Sunday, February 13, 2011 in the Sunset Home in Concordia , Kansas at the age of 93. With the death of her mother in childbirth, her early years were spent in Minnesota until after the marriage of her father to Sophie (Carlson) Okerman. The family moved to Concordia in 1927. She graduated from Concordia High School in 1935, and Bethel University in St. Paul Minnesota (then a 2 year institution). O n July 29, 1938, she was united in marriage to Dr. Thayne Arthur Coulter at the Baptist Church in Concordia. Margaret was directly involved in his medical practice starting in Delphos, and moved to Clyde in 1939. During the late 30's and 40's she became a pilot, had 2 children, and acquired a lifelong love of photography. In 1951 the family moved to Scottsdale , AZ , returning to Clyde in 1954. "Doc" retired in 1983. Margaret and "Doc" enjoyed a second home and the community of the Exuma Islands in the Bahamas where she taught Haitian refugees, continued photography commercially, and worked with local churches. As a classically trained mezzo soprano Margaret frequently sang a cappella solos for weddings, funerals, and other services as well as leading choirs in local churches. Positions held included a founding member of the National Federation of Methodist Musicians (which evolved into the Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship), the Cloud County Mental Health Association, Sunflower Mental Health Center Board, Cloud County Community College Board of Trustees, Conference Officer of United Methodist Church, Methodist Youth Fellowship Sponsor (over 20 years), and Cub Scout Den Mother. In 1964-66 Margaret was a member of the Committee that rewrote the United Methodist Hymnal. She also belonged to the Kansas Assoc. of Osteopathic Medicine Auxiliary, Salina Community Theatre, Brown Grand Theatre, Community Concert Series, and served the community informally in many ways. She is survived by her daughter, Margaret ("Peggi") Coulter Barrett of Concordia, Kansas, son, Thayne Coulter and wife Sherry (Haney) Coulter of Lakewood, Colorado, grandchildren; Michael Barrett of Thailand, Debra Barrett of California, Sabrina Goldrick of Colorado, Benjamin Coulter of Florida, Sharon Feratovic of New Jersey, Ann Ferriera of New Jersey and 8 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents as well as her brother, Wilbur ("Bill") Larson, sister, Marie (Larson) Palmquist, sister, Gerda Okerman, sister, Laura (Okerman) Larson, and sister, Ruth (Okerman) Andersen. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Tessa Zehring officiating. The family chose cremation and friends may sign the register book from 9 AM to 9 PM with the family greeting friends from 7-9 PM, Monday, March 7, 2011 at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home. Private family burial will be at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery , Concordia. The family suggests memorials to the First United Methodist Church , Sunset Home or the Clyde Ambulance Fund.
