Obituary

Harold K. Shroff died Saturday, April 4, 2009 at Mt. Jospeh Senior Community, Concordia , KS .

He was the son of Hubert and Rose (Klager) Shroff.

Harold was born January 7 , 1916 and lived most of his 93 years in Concordia, Ks. He treasured the times he shared growing up with his brother, Herbert Dale Shroff.

Harold's parents instilled in him a deep faith and trust in God. He was taught to value and respect family life. At a young age, his parents fostered in Harold and his brother a love of music. This love of music continued throughout his life. Harold graduated from Concordia High School in 1934 .

Interested in architecture, he attended Kansas University prior to entering the Army.

Harold remained a loyal KU fan and witnessed his loyalty by proudly wearing a KU hat. His musical talent led him to play trumpet in many bands during the Big Band era. As years passed, his excellent memory and experience provided him with the ability to quickly identify music, musicians and composers from that era. Harold served in the Army during World War II and was stationed in the Asiatic Pacific Theater.

After the war, he returned to Concordia. Following his father's death, Harold cared for his mother until her death in 1971.

Although he lived a simple life, Harold had a strong work ethic. He loved nature and the outdoors. He was a laborer and a farm hand. One of his joys was watching the hay being bailed during hay season. Harold looked forward to reminiscing and visiting over a cup of coffee with friends and acquaintances. Such conversations continued whether visiting in a car or in a local food establishment or other place of business. He enjoyed attending local musical events such as the military band concerts held at the Brown Grand. Due to failing health, Harold moved from his home to Mount Joseph in 2006. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother and a niece, Cynthia. He is survived by a nephew, Michael, friends and acquaintances, many of whom will miss his wisdom, sense of humor, and shared faith and philosophy.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, April 10, 2009 at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery , Concordia , KS with Rev. Dean R. Frazier officiating. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post #76 & VFW Post #588. Visitation will be held from 9 AM to 5 PM, Thurs., April 9, 2009 at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home.
