Obituary

Dr. Hubert C. "Hugh" Hattan, 81, died Wednesday February 25, 2009, at Cloud County Health Center in Concordia. He was born in Angus , NE , to Paul and Carrie Peters Hattan on November 28, 1927, and spent his childhood in Nuckolls county. He graduated from Nelson High School in May 1944. He then enlisted in the Navy and served 19 months as a radio radar operator during World War II. After his tour of duty, he attended the University of Nebraska and graduated from dental school in May 1952. Following graduation he moved to Concordia to practice with Dr. C.J.Whitney. After practicing dentistry for 44 years, he retired on May 30, 1996. Hugh was member of the Academy of General Dentistry and served for several years as state secretary-treasurer. The Academy named its annual award for outstanding service to the advancement of dentistry the Hugh Hattan Award in his honor. He was a charter member of the Great Plains Study Club and served as secretary-treasurer for 25 years. He was also a past president of the Northwest/Golden Belt District Dental Society, a life member of the Kansas Dental Association, and member of the American Dental Association. Hugh was very active in a wide range of community organizations. He was a member of the Jaycees and served as president of the Kiwanis Club. He was active in scouting and served in several leadership positions including Cub Master for Pack 32. All three of his sons received the Eagle Scout rank. The grass greens were installed during his term as president of the Concordia Country Club. He was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus and Loyal Order of the Moose. He was a member of the Catholic Church and served on both the church board and Catholic school board. He was also a member of the U.S.D. 333 school board for eight years and served as president. Hugh was married to Margaret Mazour on June 7, 1949, in Deweese , NE , and she survives. Also surviving are his children, Susan and husband Steve Kittrell, Washington, DC; Linda and husband Ron Logan, Olathe, KS; Dr. Greg Hattan and wife Janice Concordia, KS; Richard Hattan and wife Patti, Scottsdale, AZ; Dr. Mike Hattan and wife Carla, Hays, KS. Grandchildren are Justin & Jennifer Hattan, Brett & Brandon Logan, Jessica (Hattan) Christensen & Paul Hattan and Holly & Ross Hattan and one great-grandchild Alexander Christensen. He was preceeded in death by his parents, brother Wilbur and sisters Arnita Pitmon and Leota Farver. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 Saturday, Februrary 28, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help church with Father Barry Brinkman officiating. Burial will be in St. Concordia Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 AM to 9 PM with Vigil services at 6:30 PM, Friday Feb. 27, 2009 at Chaput Buoy Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church or the Brown Grand Theatre.
