James "Jim"
L. Sjogren
June 3, 1941 – May 2, 2016
James L. "Jim" Sjogren, age 74, died on Mon., May 2, 2016 in his home on the family farm north of Concordia, KS. Jim was born on June 3, 1941 in Concordia to Lawrence A. and Dorothy L. (Nichol) Sjogren.
Jim attended Sibley School and graduated from Concordia High School. He earned degrees in Agriculture and in Industrial Arts at Fort Hays State University. He married Marcia A. Moore on June 24, 1961 in Hays, KS. Jim was a lifelong farmer and had a passion for his cattle. Additionally, he was employed by Ganstrom and Johnston Contractors and OCCK.
Jim was involved in various organizations including serving National Farmers Union at the local, state and national levels. He was also appointed by former Governor John Carlin to the Kansas Corn Commission and served on the U.S. Feed Grains Council. With this position he traveled to China and Japan to promote and develop a market for American agricultural products. He was a member of St. John's Masonic Lodge No. 113 and a lifelong member of the Frist Presbyterian Church. Jim was often generous with his resources of machinery, advice and time. Those who knew Jim were always treated with a story, a joke or a witty observation.
Jim is survived by his wife, Marcia, Concordia; son, Tim Sjogren (Tara), Concordia; daughter, Tammera Bird (John), Rochester, MN; brothers, Robert "Bob" Sjogren (Marilyn), Newton, and Charles Sjogren (Bonnie), Concordia; grandchildren, Christopher Sjogren, Manhattan; Erica Bird, Rochester, MN; Brittany Ramsey (Neil), Manhattan and Ian Lewicki, Hays; brother in law, Robert "Bob" Moore (Kathy), Aztec, NM; five nephews and nieces; and his beloved dogs, Sam and Lillian.
He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Catheryn; sister in law, Franco Sjogren and parents in law, Vernon and Tressa Moore.
A celebration of Jim's life will be at 10:30 am, Sat., May 7, 2016 at the First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Bob Frasier officiating. Family will have a private inurnment at a later time. Friends may sign the register book from 9am-9pm at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home on Friday, May 6, 2016 with the family greeting friends from 7-8 pm. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or Meadowlark Hospice in care of the funeral home.
