Obituary

Jerome E. Sorell was born on Sept. 25, 1930 at Clyde, KS to Zephyr & Eva Hebert Sorell. He died on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2007 at his home in Concordia, KS. He graduated from Clyde High School in 1949. After graduation, he went to Colorado and worked in the steel mills and then later construction in Wichita, KS. He married Rita Dandurand on June 15, 1953 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Aurora, KS. She survives the home. He joined the US Marine Corp in 1951 and served until 1954 in both Europe and Korea, obtaining a rank of sergeant. He joined the Marine Reserves in 1955 and was a member of the Kansas National Guard for 19 years, retiring in 1974. After the service, he worked as an electrician and then later for the City of Concordia. He then worked as a serviceman for Kansas Power & Light for 31 years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. He was a 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Westar retirement club, a VFW Post #588 member and was a life member of American Legion Post #76 where he served as Commander in 1985. He served as District 6 American Legion Baseball Chairman and was the finance officer for the American Legion Children's Youth Activities for 35 years. He was very active in coaching both Pee-Wee and American Legion baseball. He was instrumental in starting the Travelers baseball program, which allows 16 year old's to have a separate team in Legion baseball. He spent many hours helping with the construction and development of the Concordia Sports Complex and was a shareholder in the B&B Theater. He enjoyed traveling with Rita and spent many hours watching his grandchildren in their many activities. He is survived by his wife Rita of the home; daughters, Marilyn & Gerald Thoman of Concordia, KS, Judy Sorell of Manhattan, KS & Janet Hall & Hus. Bruce of St. Louis, MO; sons, Randy Sorell, Gerald Sorell & wife Marcia all of Concordia, KS; sister, Madeline Alderson of Clyde, KS; brother-Larry Sorell & wife Madonna of Glasco, KS; 13 Grandchildren; Doug Thoman & wife Holly, Ashley Thoman, LaRae Naylor, Ryan Sorell & Witney Sorell all of Concordia, KS, Brian Thoman & wife Casey of Biloxi, MS, Angie Jordan & Hus. Thad of Clay Center, KS, Courtney Mercado & Hus. Tommy, Andrew Peterman all of Manhattan, KS, Preston Sorell of Austin, TX, Adam Sorell & wife Samera of Ottawa, KS, Stephanie Budreau & Katie Hall of St. Louis, MO; 10 Great grandchildren; Zaide & Dylan Thoman, Dalton Schwab, Alex & Cassandra Jordan, Kate, Gabriel Mercado, Kobie Sorell, Liam Lockwood & Brady Sorell. He was preceded in death by his parents & daughter, Mary Colleen Sorell. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM Sat., March 3, 2007 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Concordia. Visitation will be from 9 am to 5 pm Thurs & 9 am to 9 pm Fri. at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home. A vigil service will be held at 6:30 pm Fri at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home with a Knights of Columbus Rosary immediately following the vigil. Burial will be at the St. Concordia Cemetery, Concordia, KS with military honors by American Legion Post # 76 & VFW Post #588. The family has designated memorials to American Legion Baseball or Meadowlark Hospice.
