John Orris Jackson was born July 18, 1918 in Rydal, Kansas to John E. Jackson and Essley F. Monroe. He died Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at the Cloud County Health Center in Concordia at the age of 92 years and 9 months. John graduated eighth grade from country grade school District 12 in 1932 and Concordia High School in 1936. He enlisted in the Navy in early 1942 and served in the Armed Guard as a convoy signalman in the north Atlantic from 1942-45. While based in New York City, he met and later married Alice Hauffe, of Rahway, NJ, his wife of 65 years. After they were married, they moved to Concordia where he worked as a bookkeeper and salesman for Fitzgerald's Hardware. In 1952, they moved to a farm near Jamestown, Kansas where he farmed and operated a Grade A dairy for the next 26 years. In 1978, John retired from the dairy business, remodeled and moved into his parents' home "City Edge Farm" near Concordia where they lived until recently. To John and Alice, three daughters were born: Anita (Keith Sherwood), McPherson, KS; Andrea (Gene Leonard), Bella Vista, AR; and Ann (John Buser), Dallas, TX. John was very close to his sons-in-law and loved them as his own. John is survived by his wife, Alice; three daughters; five grandchildren: Kristi Fate (Bruce), Lee's Summit, MO; Nathan Sherwood (Kim), El Dorado, KS; Dr. Melanie Pearce, Guthrie, OK; Alyssa Buser, Dallas, TX; and Andrew "Bo" Buser, Baton Rouge, LA; four great-granddaughters: Savannah and Karli Fate and Kendall and Emma Sherwood. He is also survived by a sister, Geneva Henderson, Overland Park, KS; a brother, Billie Lee Jackson (June) Concordia. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Eilene Dalrymple and her husband Bill Dalrymple, Grand Island, NE; brother-in-law, David Henderson; and grandson-in-law Jared Pearce, Guthrie, OK.
There will be a public visitation, Thursday, April 21, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home. The family will greet friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Services will be held at the Concordia Lutheran Church at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April, 22, 2011 with Rev. David Strommen officiating. Burial services will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia, with Military Honors by American Legion Post #76 & VFW Post #588. Memorials can be made to Concordia Senior Citizens Center.
