Lena E. Berry was born on Sept. 20, 1924 to Magnus and Ethel (Mohler) Hanson on the farm west of Mankato, KS. She passed from this life on Wed., Nov. 5, 2008 at Jewell Co. Long Term Care in Mankato, KS at the age of 84. She attended country grade schools and graduated from Mankato High School in 1942. She married Grant W. Berry on March 26, 1948 in Mankato, KS. He preceded her in death in Aug. 1990. She was a lifetime Jewell Co. resident. She started cooking at the Frontier Café and then later was one of the original cooking staff members at the Jewell Co. Hospital. She later earned a Dietary degree with the hospital and was the Head Cook when she retired in 1989. She was a member of VFW Post #7830 Ladies Auxiliary, Mankato, where she served at President, Dist. President and attended the National Convention in Washington, DC as a representative from Kansas. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Harmony United Methodist Church, Mankato. She is survived by son: James Berry & wife Diette, Mankato, KS; daughters: Jean Souders & husband Dennis, Hutchinson, KS & Gayle Albert & husband Robert, Arkansas City, KS; grandchildren: Jeremy Souders, Walden, CO, Joshua Souders, Hays, KS & Amanda McCorgary & husband Wade, Arkansas City, KS; step-grandchildren: Debbie Thompson & husband Daryl, Beloit, KS; Laura Schmek & husband Glen, Wakefield, KS; Justin Darwin & wife Priscilla, Dickinson, TX & Janie Jones, Odessa, TX; step great grandchild: Dylan Thompson, Beloit,KS; a host of nephews, their spouses and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Grant; infant daughter, Karla Jo Berry; her parents; 4 brothers, Harry, Russell, Evan, Bobby & Gerald & 2 sisters, Lola & Syrena Hanson. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Mon, Nov. 10, 2008 at Harmony United Methodist Church, Mankato, KS with Pastor Tessa Zehring officiating. Visitation will be held from 2-9 PM Sun., Nov. 9, 2008 at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia and then after 9 AM Mon., Nov. 10, 2008 at the church. Burial will follow the services at Mount Hope Cemetery, Mankato. The family suggests memorials to Jewell Co. EMS or VFW Post #7830 Ladies Aux.
