Lola Mae Ostrom was born June 2, 1913 in Joplin, Missouri to Joel and Leota Hawes. She passed from this life on Sunday, August 3, 2008 at the Minneapolis Good Samaritan Center, Minneapolis, KS at the age of 95. She was raised in the Neosho, Missouri area, attending rural schools and graduating from The Neosho High School in 1931. She married Edward Ostrom in Bethel, Missouri in October, 1940. Edward and Lola raised three sons, Delbert, Wesley and Larry. Lola was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Edward and her siblings, Oscar Hawes, Calvin Hawes, the Rev. William Hawes, Roy Hawes and Nola Stone. As a young woman Lola cooked at a local Neosho restaurant where she developed an appreciation for good food. She enjoyed sharing her talent for cooking with her friends and family. Edward and Lola farmed in the Gotland community north of Concordia for many years. Time spent with her family was the highlight of Lola's life. Lola was an active member of The Baptist Church in Concordia. Lola moved to the Sunset Home in 1996 and was a resident there until 1999, when she moved to The Good Samaritan Home in Minneapolis, due to declining health. Lola worked for many years as a bookkeeper for the Firestone Store and the Rite-Way Laundry. She worked as an aid at the St Joseph Hospital and as a kitchen assistant at the Concordia High School. Lola was a dealer for Raleigh Products and was awarded several achievement awards for her sales. Lola enjoyed free time sewing and crocheting. She generously shared the products of these talents with her family and friends. She had a competitive nature and enjoyed playing Scrabble with friends from her church family. Lola was a nurturing person who would willingly care for her grandchildren and the children of friends. Lola also had to care for her Husband during his lengthy decline in health. She was a loving and dedicated wife, mother and friend. Lola developed a feeling of family with her friends and attendants at the Good Samaritan Home where she was known for her sense of humor and great disposition. Lola will be missed by her children, Delbert and wife Charlotte of Plainville, Ks., Wesley and wife Sherry of Greensburg, Ohio and Larry and wife Phyllis of Concordia, her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and her extended family at The Good Samaritan Home. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2008 at 10:00 AM at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia, KS with Rev. Dean R. Frazier officiating. Burial will follow the services at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia. Visitation will be from 9 AM to 9 PM Wed., with the family greeting friends from 6:30 to 7:30 PM Wed., August 6, 2008 at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia. The family suggests memorials to the Minneapolis Good Samaritan Center.
