Obituary

Michael (Mick, Mickey, Mike) J. Bourne passed away at his residence in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on January 4, 2026. He was born on January 26, 1947, to Raymond and Joyce (Price) Bourne, the third of four boys.

Mick had a wonderful and active childhood with his brothers, as well as neighborhood and school friends. He attended Lincoln Grade School - both the old building and new buildings, and Concordia Jr.-Sr. High School, graduating in May 1965. He spent one semester at Cloud County Jr. College when classes were being held in the Concordia High School building, before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in March 1966. He was a good Marine, carrying out his duties well and receiving commendations and timely promotions. He was released from active duty in February 1969.

Mick returned to Concordia and worked at Concordia Lumber Co. until starting his own house insulation and siding business. In the early 1980's, he moved to the Oklahoma City area, where he eventually began working in 1986 at Owens-Corning Roofing manufacturing plant. He retired in 2017.

Mick was smart and had a great love for sports and the news. He was a good all-around athlete and especially excelled in baseball, and later softball, from Pee Wees to well into his 50's. He is remembered locally as the shortstop for the American Legion 76 slow-pitch softball teams of the 1970's and 1980's. He was also an excellent pool player.

He had great friends in Kansas and gained wonderful friends in Oklahoma, with whom he became as close and caring as if they were family. In the last decade, he again became an active member of the Bourne family. He was a good communicator and gave great comfort and encouragement to those dear to him, even while facing his own struggles.

Michael is survived by his daughter Nicole Schmidt of Concordia; grandson Dayton of York, Nebraska; granddaughter Andi of Ottawa; three brothers: Gene (Annette) of Ellsworth; Jim (Brenda) of Concordia; Steve (Claudia) of Olathe. He is also survived by nephews and nieces, as well as great and great-great nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, uncles and aunts, cousins; and a nephew Kirk Bourne.

Semper Fi, Mick.

Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia, Kansas with Celebrant Samantha Stensaas officiating. Military Honors will be presented at the cemetery by the United States Marine Corps.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home in Concordia, KS.
