IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mildred Marie
Snavely
January 26, 1924 – May 3, 2012
Mildred Marie (Jack) Snavely, always the learner and follower of Jesus Christ, left this earth for heaven at the age of 88 on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at Bethany Home in Lindsborg. She was born on January 26
th
, 1924 in Concordia to Henry Clyde and Ella Mae (Mapes) Jack. She was the tenth of their eleven children. As a small girl they moved to the new home built by her father on Hwy #9, west of Concordia where she grew up.
Mildred met the love of her life, Floyd O. Snavely in 1939 after being introduced by her sister Irene. They were married at the Cloud County Courthouse at 4:00 p.m. by Judge E.W. Thompson on April 6
th
, 1940. A light snow covered the ground as they left the courthouse. They lived in Concordia where they raised their seven children. Mildred was always very active in her church, the Church of the Nazarene until 1965 and The Wesleyan Church until her health failed her. She loved teaching children in Sunday school and looked forward to teaching Vacation Bible School each summer. She delighted in the Secret Sister program at the church annually and loved the surprise element involved. She prayed daily for her pastor and family.
In the 1960's Mildred opened a home day care center that she operated more than 30 years. There she cared for scores of children. Before retiring she was keeping a third generation child and loved every minute of it. Mildred was creative, she loved crafts and had the uncanny ability to take little and make it into something beautiful. Her home was always pretty and warm.
Mildred and Floyd lived in their home at 435 East 2
nd
Street for 48 years. She loved flowers and gardening. Each year she anxiously awaited the perennial blossoms and always planted new ones to enjoy the next year. Her Victorian dining room table was often graced by beautiful bouquets from her garden. She has often said, "In the garden I find that I more easily hear the Master as he speaks to me. It is there that I pray and intercede." Mildred's signature of life was prayer. Her prayers have supported her family in life and they will continue to be answered in the lives of her extended family, until we meet again.
Mildred leaves behind her children, Duane Snavely and wife Jane of Oklahoma City, OK, Diane Knuckles of Malakoff, TX, Steven Snavely and wife Janet, Mardell Snavely, both of Concordia, Annette Bartlett of Salina; daughters in law, Janet Snavely, Mary Snavely, both of Concordia; 29 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years; parents; two sons, Leland and Lloyd; two grandsons, Tommy H. Spencer, Jr. and Steven Richard Snavely; and siblings, Mae, Irene, Clara, Virta, Cleo, Milo, Elmer, Emmitt, Clifford and Ivan;
A special thanks is given to the staff at Mount Joseph Senior Village in Concordia, Bethany Home in Lindsborg, and Hospice of Kansas in McPherson for their care, compassion, and support.
