Obituary

Patricia Ann Hanson, 79, of Roland, Iowa passed away on January 8, 2008 at Israel Family Hospice House, in Ames, Iowa. Patricia Ann Peterson, third child of Frank Ashley and Eunice Julia (Stinson) Peterson, was born on September 28, 1928 in Concordia, Kansas. She was baptized on Jan. 9, 1938 at the Baptist Church in Concordia, Kansas. She was a longtime member of Danish Lutheran Church, Cloud County, Kansas; and Ada Lutheran Church of Peace Lutheran Parish. Upon moving to Iowa, she and Don became active members of Bergen. On September 4, 1949, Patricia Peterson and Donald Hanson were married in Concordia, Kansas. Don and Pat farmed near Jamestown from 1949-2001. Patricia completed her bachelor's degree with honors at Ottawa University in 1949, and later earned a master's degree in education from Kansas State University. Pat became a teacher at Concordia, Kansas schools, where she taught history and social sciences for thirty-one years. She also served as a leader in charitable organizations, including P.E.O., A.A.U.W., the F. B. Mission and Eastern Star, for which she served as Chaplain and as Worthy Grand Matron for the state of Kansas. In 2001, Pat and Don moved to Roland, Iowa to be near children and grandchildren. Living in the Homestead Community, their enjoyment of life together made them many new friends. She enjoyed traveling to New England, the Holy Land and Greece to visit children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Church, family and friends were important to Pat. She welcomed many friends, relatives and visitors for meals in her home. Patricia attended adult classes, was active in WELCA, and was present in worship every Sunday. She pursued her life-long interest in history by traveling to historic sites around the country and world.  We all remember Patricia's strong faith, intelligence and hospitality.  We also recall her love for encouraging and teaching her grandchildren, great grandchildren and ehr students.  We now number her among the great cloud of witnesses that cheers us on in the journey of life.  She lived secure in the knowledge of God's continuous presence, energized by the mystery of Christ's love and her love for Christ. She is survived by her husband, Donald and their four children, eight grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. They are: son Dr. Louis Hanson and Julie Tate of Durham, Maine; granddaughter Elizabeth Blythe, great grandchildren Lucy and Tuck Mercer; her grandsons, Andrew Hanson and Michael Caron; daughter Dr. Rebecca Hanson Richardson and Harry Richardson of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, grandchildren Nathan Richardson and Elizabeth Grattan-Richardson; daughter The Rev. Rachael Hanson and Dennis McFall of Roland; granddaughters Katherine Patricia McFall, Christina Julia McFall, and Anna Sarah McFall; and daughter Sr. Aemilianie of the Holy Monastery of the Twelve Apostles in Karditsa, Greece. Patricia is also survived by two sisters, Frances Crosson of Minneapolis, Kansas; and Martha Brummett and husband Richard of Leawood, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter Amy Leigh Richardson, her brother, Frank Ashley Peterson, Jr., and her mother and father. Visitation will be Thursday, January 10, 2008 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Bergen Lutheran Church in Roland, IA. Funeral services will be Friday, January 11th at 10:30 a.m. at Bergen Lutheran Church, Roland, IA.  Burial will be on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Danish Lutheran Cemetery, Jamestown, Kansas, followed by a memorial service at 1:00 p.m. at Ada Lutheran Church, Courtland, KS. Memorials may be designated for Danish Lutheran Cemetery or Bergen Lutheran Church.
