Reverend Henry Joseph Kieffer, age 85, of Concordia, Ks, died January 10, 2009, at the Mount Joseph Senior Village in Concordia, Kansas.
He was born on December 7, 1923 on a farm near Palmer, Kansas, the son of Joseph G. and Catherine R. (L'Ecuyer) Kieffer. He was one of 13 children. With his family, he later lived in Clifton, Kansas; on a farm near Ames, Kansas; in Clyde, Kansas; and in Belleville, Kansas where he completed grade school and graduated from Belleville High School in 1942. He served in the Armed Forces during World War II in the European Theater (England and France) beginning April 1943 until December 1945. He received an honorable discharge as a Sergeant in the 9 th Air Force Troop Carrier Command. He entered Conception Seminary in 1946. He was ordained a Catholic Priest on May 27, 1954 by the for the Diocese of Salina. He served as a parochial vicar at St. Michael Catholic Church, in Collyer, Ks (54-58). He served as pastor at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Minneapolis, KS (58-60), Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Cawker City, KS and St. Mary''s Catholic Church in Downs, Ks (60-72) (building new Churches in both parishes), St. John's Catholic Church in Beloit, Ks (72-78), St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Clyde, Ks and St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Joseph (78-81), chaplain at the Nazareth Mother House in Concordia (81-85), St. Peter''s Catholic Church in Aurora, KS (83-85), and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Colby, Ks (85-93). He retired in 1993, and has offered Sacramental services as needed to Mount Joseph until his death. Reverend Kieffer also enjoyed working with Boy Scouts of America, serving as chaplain and Diocesan Director beginning in 1958. He received the Wood Badge in 1966, and the Silver Beaver Award in 1967. He was also a 4 th Degree Knight of Columbus. Apart from serving as a priest, he enjoyed family genealogy, photography, woodworking, family and friends. He is survived by six sisters: Mary Popelka and her husband Stanley of Belleville; Theresa Baxa of Beloit, Ks; Marge Walker of Belleville, Ks, Ann Danielson and her husband Elwin of Belleville, Ks; Judy Meis and her husband Herb of Iliff, Co, and Marilyn Wilson of Larned, Ks. He is survived by two brothers: David and his wife Diane, Hartford City, In; and Jim and his wife Dixie, Pancho Murieta, Ca. He is survived by two sister-in-laws: Virginia (Mrs. John) Kieffer, and Karan (Mrs. Thomas) Kieffer, both of Belleville, Ks as well as a host of cousins, 24 nieces and 24 nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a step-mother Magdalyn Hiendel Kieffer, three brothers: Joseph G. Kieffer (died infancy), John Kieffer, and Thomas Kieffer; one sister: Jane Kieffer; and four brother-in-laws: Al (Theresa) Baxa, Willis (Marge) Walker, Terry (Marilyn) Huff and Fred (Marilyn) Wilson. Visitation will be held from 12-8 PM Wed. and 9 AM to 5 PM Thurs. at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia and after 5 PM at the church. A Vigil Service will be held at 7:00 PM on Thursday, January 15, 2009 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, January 16, 2009 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with Bishop Paul S. Coakley as celebrant. Internment with military honors will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Clyde, Kansas. Memorials may give given to Community of the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse and Nazareth Academy.Visits: 0
