Rodney “RJ” Lowell, 79, Concordia, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, March 19, 2026. He was born on March 5, 1947, son of Bill and Loretta (Hood) Lowell.
He attended schools in Concordia and graduated from Concordia High School in 1965. He then attended Cloud County Community College until he was drafted into the United States Army.
He married Marilyn Sallman on February 28, 1970, in New Kirk, Oklahoma. This union brought two sons, William and Chad.
He spent most of his working years as a concrete supervisor for Coonrod and Associates. He spent time as a Concordia Police Officer, continuing to moonlight on concrete jobs.
RJ was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, the Moose Lodge, and Elks Lodge. He enjoyed going gambling at casinos and anything related to his family. His #1 favorite activity was attending his grandchildren’s sports events.
RJ was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Loretta Lowell, and Donald Smith, parents-in-law Clifford and Edith Sallman, and sisters-in-law, Iris Lee, Judy Valcoure, and Alice Goddard.
He will be missed by his wife Marilyn ; sons, William (Crystal) of Concordia, KS and Chad of Colorado; grandchildren, Koral Bates (Fuller), Brady Lowell (Jessica), Brianna MacLean (Tristan), Trevor Lowell (Kendra), Brittany Shoemaker (Lane), and Brooklyn Lowell; great grandchildren, Brayton Bates, Kace Bates, Kinsley Bates, Stevie Lowell, Huxley Hofmeier, Scottie Lowell, and Ryker Shoemaker; brother Kirk Lowell (Janet); aunt Janet Dorman; sisters-in-law Phyllis Shanks, Fran Trost (Larry), and Ruth Gardner; brother-in-law Bill Valcoure (Lisa); and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family.
A funeral service will be held at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. with Joshua Meyer officiating. Burial will follow at Zion Cemetery, Concordia, KS. The family will greet friends beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
