He attended grade school in Kansas City , Kansas , and Prairie Village , Kansas . He graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School in Prairie Village in 1962.

Roger enlisted in the Navy in 1963 and served aboard the aircraft carrier, the USS Essex. His role as a crewman was to set the catapults that launched jet aircraft from the carrier deck. He spoke often of the adventure of visiting foreign ports and of a terrible storm in the North Atlantic with seas over 80 feet. Roger was honorably discharged after serving out his enlistment on February 1, 1969.

Roger attended Pittsburg State University .

He worked for TWA in Kansas City , Missouri . He obtained a commercial pilot's license and completed training as an FAA air traffic controller in the early 1970s.

In the 1980s, he became certified as a commercial truck driver and made deliveries throughout California hauling plants for a nursery. He was a security site supervisor for the Memorex Westlake Plant in California . He then worked with Dial Security of Camarillo, California prior to moving back to Kansas .

When his parents moved to Sunset Home in Concordia , Kansas , Roger relocated to Salina where he worked for Midwest Security serving at the Salina Regional Medical Center campus.

He later moved to Concordia , Kansas to be close to his parents. He worked in the local Wal-Mart store. He was officially recognized several times for his good work and reliability. He was proud of his tile in Wal-Mart with his name on it that was placed there after his 10 year anniversary. He became a proud home owner. Unfortunately, health issues eventually prohibited his continued employment—a development which he took very hard.

Roger led a quiet life. He was humble but showed great pride when talking about the accomplishments of his family—especially his nieces and nephews as well as his great nieces and great nephews.
