Sister Edwardine Flavin died May 27, 2016, at Mount Joseph Senior Village in Concordia, KS. She was 92 years old and a Sister of St. Joseph for 72 years. She was born in Cawker City, KS on September 18, 1923 to John and Elizabeth Heinen Flavin, the third of six children, and was baptized Marcella Ruth. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, Concordia, KS on July 16, 1943. On March 19, 1944, Marcella received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name Sister Edwardine. She pronounced first vows on March 19, 1945 and final vows on August 15, 1948.
Sister Edwardine served as financial manager for 25 years in a number of Congregational owned and operated hospitals in Kansas and one in Belvidere, Illinois. She was elected treasurer of the Congregation in June 1965 and served in this position until 1985. Beginning in 1990, Sister served as bookkeeper at Manna House of Prayer, retiring this position in 2005. In 2010, Sister Edwardine was transferred to Mount Joseph Senior Village.
Sister Edwardine was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and four brothers.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
A Bible Vigil Service will be held May 30 at 7:00 p.m. in the Nazareth Motherhouse Auditorium, with Sister Christella Buser as the eulogist. The Mass of Christian Burial will be May 31 at 10:30 a.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel, with Rev. James Hoover presiding. The burial will be in the Nazareth Motherhouse Cemetery.
