Sister Mary Leo Zeman died November 1, 2010, at Mt. Joseph Senior Village in Concordia, KS. She was 92 years old and a Sister of St. Joseph for 73 years. She was born in Dorrance, KS on December 12, 1917 to Frank and Barbara Vopat Zeman, the fifth of nine children, and was baptized Georgina Alice. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, Concordia, KS on September 8, 1936. On March 18, 1937, Georgina received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name Sister Mary Leo. She pronounced first vows on March 19, 1938 and final vows on August 15, 1941. Sister Mary Leo received her A.B. degree in Business from Marymount College and her Masters degree in Education from Creighton University, Omaha. She served in grade school and high school classrooms in Fairbury, NE, Concordia, Park, Salina, Beloit, Tipton, Junction City, KS and Boonville, MO. After 30 years in education, she served four years as Secretary General for the Sisters of St. Joseph in Concordia, KS. Following this term she worked at Central Catholic High School in Grand Island, NE until her retirement in 1971. In 2003, Sister Mary Leo retired to the Motherhouse and in 2009 she moved to Mt. Joseph Senior Village. Sister Mary Leo was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters and two brothers. She is survived by two sisters, Josephine Hinnenkamp of Salina and Alice Homeier of Wilson, KS. A Bible Vigil Service will be (was) held November 4, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the Nazareth Motherhouse Chapel with Sister Bette Moslander as the eulogist. The Mass of Christian Burial will be (was) November 5 at 10:30 a.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel with Fr. Jack Schlaf presiding. The burial will be in the Nazareth Motherhouse Cemetery.
