Sister Mary Stanislaus Porter died February 2, 2010, at Mount Joseph Senior Community in Concordia, KS. She was 93 years old and a Sister of St. Joseph for 66 years. She was born in Edmond, KS on May 3, 1916 to Thomas and Alice Divel Porter, the fourth of six children, and was baptized Doris. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, Concordia, KS. on May 26, 1942. On March 19, 1943, Doris received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name Sister Mary Stanislaus. She pronounced first vows on March 19, 1944 and final vows on August 15, 1947.
Sister Mary Stanislaus received a B.A. in English from Marymount College in Salina and a M.A. in Education from Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI. She taught in schools staffed by the Sisters of St. Joseph in Antonino, Cawker City, Concordia, Abilene, KS, in Silver City, NM and Grand Island, NE. From 1984 to 2001, she was pastoral associate in Beloit, Glasco, Cawker City, Mankato, Esbon and Smith Center, KS. She served as Administrator of the retirement home for Sisters in Salina. In 2001, she retired to Nazareth Motherhouse. She moved to Mt. Joseph Senior Village in 2004.
Sister Mary Stanislaus was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and three sisters. She is survived by many nieces and nephews. A Bible Vigil Service will be (was) held Thursday, February 4, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the Nazareth Motherhouse Chapel with Sister Mary Jo Thummel as the eulogist. The Mass of Christian Burial will be (was) Friday, February 5, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel with Rev. Jack Schlaf presiding. The burial will be in the Nazareth Motherhouse Cemetery. Memorials for Sister Mary Stanislaus Porter may be given to the Sisters of St. Joseph Health Care/ Retirement Fund or the Apostolic Works of the Sisters; P.O Box 279, Concordia, KS 66901.
