Obituary

Sister Generosa Walker died Thursday, July 12, 2012, at the Nazareth Motherhouse in Concordia. She was 101 years old and a Sister of St. Joseph for 78 years. She was born in Mayetta, on September 6, 1910 to Christopher and Mary Isabel (Goderl) Walker, the fourth of seven children, and was baptized Gertrude Cecelia. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, Concordia, on August 15, 1933. On March 18, 1934, Gertrude received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name Sister Generosa. She pronounced first vows on March 19, 1935 and final vows on August 15, 1938. Sister Generosa received an AB in Mathematics, English, Science and Social Studies from Marymount College in Salina . She taught in schools staffed by the Sisters of St. Joseph in Aurora , Salina , Park, Concordia, Tipton, Leoville, Junction City , Beloit , St. George , IL , and Boonville , MO. She retired to St. Mary's Convent, Concordia, in 1972. Upon closing of St. Mary's, she moved to Nazareth Motherhouse in 1985.

Sister Generosa was preceded in death by her parents, and six brothers.

A Bible Vigil Service will be held Sunday, July 15, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. in the Nazareth Motherhouse Chapel with Sister Jean Rosemarynoski as the eulogist. The Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, July 16, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel with Rev. James Hoover presiding. The burial will be in the Nazareth Motherhouse Cemetery . Memorials for Sister Generosa Walker may be given to the Sisters of St. Joseph Health Care/ Retirement Fund or the Apostolic Works of the Sisters; P.O Box 279, Concordia, KS 66901.
