Obituary

Sister Athanasia Weber died January 12, 2011 at Mount Joseph Senior Community in Concordia, KS.  She was 93 years old and a Sister of St. Joseph for 77 years.  She was born in Seneca, KS on March 31, 1917 to Henry and Hazel McEnaney Weber, the first of two children, and was baptized Constance Geraldine.  She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, Concordia, KS. on June 1, 1932.  On August 15, 1933, Constance received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name Sister Athanasia.  She pronounced first vows on March 19, 1935 and final vows on March 19, 1938. Sister Athanasia received her A.B. degree in Music Education from Marymount College and her Masters degree in Music from De Paul University, Chicago.  She taught classroom and choral music in grade and high schools staffed by the Sisters of St. Joseph in Aurora, Concordia, Salina, Beloit, Damar and Marymount College in Kansas and in Silver City, NM, Grand Island, NE, and Monette, MO.  In 1969, Sister Athanasia semi-retired to the Motherhouse where she served as organist/liturgist and continued to teach private music lessons.  In 2004 she moved to Mt. Joseph Senior Village.
Sister Athanasia was preceded in death by her parents and sister.  A Bible Vigil Service will be (was) held January 13, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the Nazareth Motherhouse Chapel with Sister Bette Moslander as the eulogist.  The Mass of Christian Burial will be (was) January 14, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel with Father Jack Schlaf presiding.  The burial will be in the Nazareth Motherhouse Cemetery.  Chaput-Buoy Mortuary, 325 W. 6th St., Concordia, KS is in charge of arrangements.  Memorials for Sister Athanasia may be given to the Sisters of St. Joseph Health Care/ Retirement Fund or the Apostolic Works of the Sisters; P.O Box 279, Concordia, KS  66901.
