Obituary

Dr. Thayne Arthur Coulter was born in Roosevelt, Oklahoma, August 9, 1912, to Arthur E. and Minnie Hansen Coulter. He passed from this life on Thursday, May 31, 2007 at Cloud County Health Center in Concordia, Kansas as the age of 94. His early years were spent in Hiawatha, KS, until the family moved to Concordia in 1925. He graduated from Concordia High School (1931) , Kansas Wesleyan University (1935), and the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons, now the University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine, Kansas City. Postgraduate work included Vienna, Istanbul, Athens and other countries, as well as California, Colorado, Nebraska, and Kansas University Medical Center. He married Margaret Larson on July 29, 1938 in Concordia. In 1937, he began his private practice in Delphos, then moved his practice to Clyde in 1939, where he delivered many babies in hospitals and country homes, sometimes traveling in mud and on horseback, and practiced in Concordia, at one time as chief of staff, among other things he established the helicopter rescue program. He was on the staff of many hospitals. During WWII he was the practicing physician designated by the government to cover the various counties and nursing homes. For a time during WWII, a surgical practice between Concordia and Superior, NE, was maintained by flying a private plane. In 1951, the family moved to Scottsdale, AZ, returning to Clyde in 1954. He was on staff at both St. Joseph's and the old Concordia Hospital, Republic County Hospital in Belleville and the hospital in Superior, NE. He was board certified by both the American Medical Assoc. and the American Osteopathic Assoc. He retired in 1983. Dr. Coulter established and furnished four clinics in South Carolina, after Hurricane Hugo. He and Margaret enjoyed a second home and the community of the Exuma Islands in the Bahamas. Positions held included Director Kansas Assoc. for Commerce and Industry, Cloud County Health Officer and Coroner, Clyde City Council, Advisory Board of Park Villa Nursing Home, Clyde, St. Ann's Nursing Home in Concordia, Estelle's Care Home in Clifton, and many other nursing homes, covering five counties; Medical Director Sunflower Guidance Center, Coordinator Clyde Flood Rehabilitation, United Methodist Church Conference Officer, Brown Grand Theatre and medical advisor to Cloud County Community College. He was a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge, Scottish Rite Shrine, ELKS Lodge, Moose Lodge, Lions Club, American and Kansas Assoc. of Osteopathic Medicine, American Medical Assoc., Iota Tau Sigma, Sigma Sigma Phi, Salina Community Theatre, Brown Grand Theatre, Brown Grand Opera House Restoration Commission, and a number of local service organizations. His awards were many and he felt his greatest award was watching the many miracles God performed. He was always challenging, diagnosing and enjoying all layers of God's wonderful world. He was an avid horseman, fisherman and large game hunter. He played various instruments in town and high school bands and had personal associations with jazz greats throughout his life. He is survived by his wife, Margaret of the home, daughter, Margaret "Peggi" Coulter Barrett of Concordia, Kansas, son, Thayne Coulter and wife Sherry (Haney) Coulter of Lakewood, Colorado, grandchildren, Michael Barrett of Thailand, Debra Barrett of California, Sabrina Goldrick of Colorado, Benjamin Coulter of Hawaii, Sharon Zanghi of New Jersey, Ann Ferriera of New Jersey and 7 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorial services are scheduled for 10:30 AM, Tuesday, June 12, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church, Concordia with Rev. Sandra K. Moore, officiating. On Monday, June 11, 2007 at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, friends may sign the register book from 9 AM to 9 PM and the family will visit and greet friends from 7-9 PM. The remains were cremated and inurnment will follow the memorial services at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia. The family suggests memorials to the First United Methodist Church, Cloud County Health Center and the Clyde Ambulance Fund.
