Obituary

Virgil J. Larsen, age 89, died, Sat., July 6, 2013 at Cloud County Health Center, Concordia. He was born on Sept. 8, 1923 in Rural Jamestown, KS to Harrold F. & Bertha J. (Vandeveer) Larsen.

He attended rural grade school at Dist. 19 and then graduated from Concordia High School in 1941. He married Ruby L. Rasmussen on June 3, 1945. After graduating, he worked for neighbors and also went to Colorado to work in harvest fields of sugar beets & other crops. When his brothers, Mervin & Glenn were called into service, Virgil enlisted in the Army but when he went for his physical in K.C., he was denied entry, as he was the remaining son to stay home. He received a "C2" farm deferment and helped on the farm during the remaining 1 ½ years of the war. Farming with horses to the modern day equipment has been his career. He won several cornhusking awards and enjoyed fishing & hunting on the Republican River. Playing baseball was a passion and he played for several teams, mostly the Norway town team as a pitcher & outfielder. Taking an interest in all sports was important to Virgil. His main hobby was carving wooden animals and other items. Virgil and Ruby were members of Concordia Lutheran Church and enjoyed attending events in the community. They celebrated their 68 th wedding anniversary on June 3, 2013. They moved to the Marquis Place in Concordia in 2009.

Virgil is survived by his wife, Ruby, Concordia; son, Dennis Larsen & wife Colleen, Jamestown; daughter, Janet Cunningham & hus. John, Glen Elder; sister, Corda McMillan & hus. Stanley, Jamestown, KS; 5 grandchildren, Aaron (Stacy) Larsen, Jamestown, Laurie (Todd) Johnson, Wichita, Angela (Tyler) Odle, Beloit, Brent (Jessica) Cunningham & Terry (Crystal) Cunningham, both of Glen Elder;& 11 great grandchildren, Cole & Taegan Larsen, Avanelle Brady & Natalie Johnson, Darby & Chloe Odle, Drew, Tanna & Bailee Cunningham & Kylan & Jace Cunningham.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Mervin & Glenn; sisters, Laverne Currie, Agnes Rodgers & Opal Gile.

Funeral services will be at 10 am, Thurs., July 11, 2013 at Concordia Lutheran Church with Rev. David Strommen officiating. Burial will follow at the Danish Lutheran Cemetery, Rural Jamestown. Visitation will be from 9 am to 9 pm, Wed. with the family greeting from 7-8 pm at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the Concordia Lutheran Church in care of the funeral home.
